Milton Council Supports Canada’s Joint Statement on Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

With powerful stories of grief, resilience, and hope filling the council chambers, Milton Town Council took a decisive and compassionate stance on Monday night. In a unanimous vote, council members endorsed a joint statement from Canada, the UK, and France condemning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.

The joint declaration, originally issued by the three nations last month, describes the suffering in Gaza as “intolerable,” calling for an immediate ceasefire, full humanitarian access, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and an end to illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank. While it affirms Israel’s right to self-defense after the October 7 attacks, it calls the military response “wholly disproportionate.”

Councillors Sameera Ali and Sarah Marshall introduced the motion, which was met with strong support from a full gallery of residents. Emotional testimonies from local community members — including Palestinian-Canadians, Muslim leaders, and Jewish allies — emphasized the importance of the motion and the impact it could have at the local level.

“When it comes to basic human rights — food, water, safety — we cannot pick and choose,” said Councillor Ali. “This is about letting Palestinian Miltonians, and all Miltonians, know they matter.”

Sarah Marshall echoed these sentiments, calling the humanitarian situation “unfathomable” and urging her colleagues to act out of empathy and moral clarity.

Speakers shared heartbreaking stories from Gaza and their personal connections to the crisis, including a Milton resident who fled the region with her children but remains separated from her husband. Others spoke of how the trauma is affecting youth, identity, and belonging right here in Milton.

Despite having no control over foreign policy, council’s decision was described as a symbolic yet powerful gesture, affirming the values of empathy, inclusivity, and global responsibility that Milton holds dear.
