Free Craft Kits for Milton Teens to Honour Orange Shirt Day

ree

In recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the story of Phyllis Jack Web stad, the Milton Public Library’s Beaty Branch is offering take-and-make craft kits for youth ages 13–17.

Each kit includes supplies and step-by-step instructions to create a beaded orange shirt pin—a symbol of remembrance and solidarity to be worn on September 30th. Kits will be available for pickup starting Tuesday, September 23rd, while supplies last.

Orange Shirt Day is a time to honor survivors of the Residential School system and to remember the thousands of children who never returned home. From 1874 to 1996, around 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children were forced to attend Residential Schools. More than 3,000 children are confirmed to have died, though the true number is believed to exceed 6,000.

The movement began with the story of Phyllis Web stad. At just six years old, she wore a new bright orange shirt, gifted by her grandmother, on her first day at a Residential School. It was taken away and never returned—becoming a powerful symbol of trauma, resilience, and remembrance.

This meaningful craft activity gives Milton teens the opportunity to learn, reflect, and honour the stories of survivors while creating something to proudly wear on Orange Shirt Day.
