A Milton Councillor has been chosen as the new Chair of the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA).
John Challinor II, Town Councillor for Milton’s Ward 2, will work alongside Shawn Watters, the Mayor of Centre Wellington, who was elected Vice-Chair.
The GRCA Board of Directors elected both leaders during their meeting on Friday, January 24. These elections are held every year at the board's first meeting.
The GRCA Board has 26 members, representing municipalities in the Grand River watershed.
Challinor has served as a Milton Councillor for a total of 22 years (1991–2006 and 2018 to now). He is also Chair of Milton’s Accessibility Advisory Committee and has been Halton Region’s representative on the GRCA Board since 2019.
“The GRCA has been vital in protecting the Grand River watershed for nearly 100 years,” said Challinor. “I’m excited to work with Vice-Chair Shawn Watters, the Board, GRCA CAO Samantha Lawson, and her team to create programs that will preserve the watershed for future generations.”
Challinor is also the President of the Milton Historical Society and known for hosting the weekly "Street Name Monday" segments.
Watters, the newly elected Vice-Chair, has been a GRCA Board member since 2022 and also served from 2007 to 2010. He became Mayor of Centre Wellington in 2022 and has been active in local and county councils for 25 years.
Challinor takes over from Chris White, who became GRCA Chair in 2021, while Watters replaces Sue Foxton as Vice-Chair, also elected in 2021.
