Milton Navy League Cadets Honour 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic

Under overcast skies at Victoria Park Cenotaph, the Milton Navy League Cadets from NLCC Adventure stood in solemn tribute to the Canadians who served in one of the most pivotal and perilous campaigns of the Second World War—the Battle of the Atlantic.

The ceremony, held this past weekend, marked the 80th anniversary of the longest continuous military operation of WWII. As part of a national day of remembrance, the cadets joined veterans, community members, and local dignitaries in paying their respects through a wreath-laying and moment of silence.

"The Battle of the Atlantic was a turning point in the war," said a local Navy League officer. "It’s important for our youth to understand the magnitude of the sacrifices made at sea to protect our freedom."

The campaign, which stretched from 1939 to 1945, claimed the lives of over 4,600 members of the Royal Canadian Navy and Merchant Navy. Canadian forces played a crucial role in keeping supply lines open between North America and Europe, often battling harsh weather, U-boats, and long odds.

For the cadets, participating in the event was more than just ceremonial—it was an educational and meaningful experience.

"Being here reminds us that freedom comes at a cost," said one young cadet. "We’re proud to honour those who served before us."

The Milton Navy League continues to engage youth in learning about Canada’s naval history, instilling values of leadership, respect, and remembrance that will carry into the next generation.
