Milton’s first provincial election candidates' meeting is set to take place, but one seat is expected to remain empty.
The Downtown Milton Business Improvement Area (DMBIA) is hosting a public meeting with provincial candidates on Feb. 20 at Southside Community Church.
As of the morning of Feb. 19, three candidates had confirmed their attendance:
Katherine Cirlincione (NDP)
Kristina Tesser Derksen (Ontario Liberal Party)
Mohsin Rizvi (Ontario Centrist Party)
Two candidates have confirmed they will not attend:
Susan Doyle (Green Party)
Zee Hamid (PC - Incumbent)
John Spina of the New Blue Party had not responded to the DMBIA’s calls as of Feb. 20.
When asked why PC candidate Hamid would not be attending, his campaign stated they would focus on direct voter engagement instead.
“Our plan to protect Milton means being present in our community, at people’s doors, and listening to concerns about the unprecedented economic uncertainty Ontario is facing,” the statement read. “Zee Hamid will spend every day of the campaign doing just that.”
PC candidates across the province have declined to participate in local debates. However, during the 2024 provincial byelection, Hamid attended multiple debates before winning with 12,880 votes (47.04% of ballots cast), defeating his closest Ontario Liberal Party rival by 2,407 votes.
Green Party candidate Doyle stated she could not attend due to a prior commitment.
The DMBIA provincial candidates' meeting will take place on Feb. 20 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Questions for the candidates can be submitted at downtownmilton.ca.
Election day is Thursday, Feb. 27.
