Milton Pushes Province for Support as Growth Plan Moves Forward

Writer: Sana ShahidSana Shahid

Milton hopes the upcoming election will be the right time for the province to finally listen to its concerns.

At the Jan. 27 council meeting, local officials approved the Britannia Secondary Plan, which will guide the development of new neighborhoods in southern and eastern Milton. The plan includes 17,500 new homes and will bring 57,500 more residents to the town.

Councillor Colin Best (Ward 1) added an amendment asking the provincial government—specifically the ministers of health, education, transportation, and infrastructure, as well as Metrolinx—to review the plan and consider expanding schools, hospitals, and public transit to meet the needs of a growing population.

“We’ve sent many requests to the province before, but with an election possibly coming, now is a good time to remind them we need help. If we’re approving this level of development, we need more provincial infrastructure,” said Best.

Hospital Wait Times Show Growing Pressure

To prove his point, Best referenced the Halton Healthcare website, which showed that the wait time to see a doctor in the Milton District Hospital emergency room was over two hours as of Jan. 27.

“This is a real concern,” said Best. “When the hospital expansion opened in 2017, it was built for a population of 150,000. But now, they’re at 100% capacity, and it’s only getting worse.”

Milton’s rapid growth is putting pressure on healthcare, education, and transit, and local officials are pushing for the province to step up and help.
