Milton’s rapidly growing population is set to benefit from a major investment in public transit infrastructure. Over $7.2 million in federal funding has been secured through the baseline funding stream of the Canada Public Transit Fund, ensuring stable financial support for transit upgrades and modernization from 2026 to 2036.
Enhancing Connectivity “Expanding and modernizing our local public transit network will ensure that more residents can get where they need to go, when they need to go,” said MP Adam van Koeverden at an announcement on Monday (Jan. 13) at Milton Town Hall. He emphasized the importance of access to key hubs, including the Milton Mall, schools, and post-secondary institutions.
Mayor Gord Krantz highlighted the investment’s role in promoting sustainable transportation. “Getting people like you and I out of our cars is really what this is all about. It's great to partner with the federal government,” he said.
Growing Ridership and Educational Expansion Milton’s public transit system recently celebrated a milestone of one million rides, attributed to improved service planning and the growing presence of post-secondary institutions, such as Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College.
“We now have around 2,000 students in the community, with classes starting in late 2023 and continuing through 2024,” said Andy Scott, the Town’s senior director of strategic initiatives. The student population is projected to grow to 15,000 once the permanent campus at the Milton Education Village is completed.
Long-Term Sustainability and Modernization Kristene Scott, the Town’s commissioner of corporate services, stressed the importance of predictable, long-term funding. “This support will allow us to improve service, expand transit, and work toward launching battery-electric buses to reduce our carbon footprint,” she said.
The funding will be used for fleet replacement, bus acquisitions, accessibility improvements, and enhancing connections to active transportation routes, ensuring a more sustainable and accessible transit system.
Canada Public Transit Fund As part of the largest public transit investment in Canadian history, the Canada Public Transit Fund provides municipalities with essential resources to develop and implement long-term transit solutions.
