Writer: Sana ShahidSana Shahid

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is teaming up with Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) to host a Sports Festival on February 4, 5, and 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Milton Velodrome (2015 Pan Am Blvd, Milton). This event will welcome hundreds of HDSB elementary students with special education needs for a day of fun and physical activity.

What is the Sports Festival?

The festival, organized by Special Olympics Ontario, introduces students and their families to Special Olympics programs. It is a non-competitive event where young athletes with intellectual or physical disabilities can try different sports and activities in a supportive and inclusive environment. The goal is to help students build confidence, develop physical skills, and connect with their community.

Why This Event Matters

“We are very proud to host this event for over 260 students,” said Colette Ruddock, HDSB Superintendent of Education (Special Education Services).“The Halton District School Board values the talents of all students, and we are excited to showcase their skills. Events like this help students feel connected, supported, and celebrated. We can’t wait to cheer them on!”

HDSB’s 2024-2028 Plan for Inclusion

This festival aligns with HDSB’s 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which focuses on human rights, equity, and inclusion. The plan ensures that HDSB’s 67,000 students and 11,000 staff work together to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

This event is a great opportunity for students to experience the joy of sports, build friendships, and feel part of a larger community!
