New Fortino's and Housing Development Coming to Milton

A long-vacant field in a busy part of Milton is finally moving toward development.

At a Nov. 3 council meeting, Jadeon Senkowski, a planner with Glen Schnarr & Associates representing Field gate Developments, outlined plans for the 12-acre site at the southeast corner of Louis St. Laurent Avenue and Bronte Street South. The proposal includes 277 townhouses, three 15-storey apartment buildings, and nine commercial buildings.

Senkowski confirmed that one of the commercial sites will be a Fortino's grocery store. The land is bordered by the CN rail corridor to the west, Louis St. Laurent Avenue to the north, Bronte Street South and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School to the east, and Elsie MacGill Public Secondary School to the south.

Several councilors raised concerns about student safety, noting that more retail options could attract teens to cross busy roads. They urged planners to address potential pedestrian risks.

Ward 4 Regional Councilor Sameera Ali said she was pleased to see the project moving forward and appreciated improvements made since the original proposal.

“I’m excited on behalf of Ward 4 residents to finally see these plans and understand what’s being built. Whenever building heights are reduced, residents definitely welcome that,” Ali said.

Senkowski could not give a construction start date but said the team hopes to move quickly. Town staff added that a final recommendation will come to council in the next few months.
