Revitalizing Railways: A Decade-Old Proposal to Boost GO Train Service in Milton and Beyond

Writer: Sana ShahidSana Shahid

The province is reconsidering a big change to local transit.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford sent a letter to Metrolinx on January 9, asking the agency to look into the Missing Link freight rail bypass. The goal is to improve GO Transit service in Milton and across the province. This is part of the larger GO 2.0 plan, which will invest billions in transit projects to boost Ontario’s economy.

The letter explains that this long-term project could improve GO train service by moving freight trains off existing passenger lines. The Missing Link would create a new freight rail bypass near Highway 407, running from Trafalgar Road in Milton to Bramalea.

For years, government officials have talked about and promised all-day, two-way GO train service in Milton. By moving freight trains to a separate line, more train service could be offered to commuters. However, this project would need the support of Metrolinx and multiple levels of government.

Milton MP Adam van Koeverden said he wants to discuss this idea with federal ministers. He explained that the Missing Link is a more expensive but ambitious solution to achieving all-day, two-way service. It would involve rerouting freight trains north of the city, as many currently run through Toronto.

A 2015 report estimated the Missing Link project would cost $5.3 billion and require 89 hectares of land. The Milton corridor is the fourth busiest line in the GO network, and by 2041, it’s expected to have 94,000 daily riders.
