The Milton Sports Centre now features a bold and inspiring mural painted by local youth — a permanent piece that celebrates inclusion, creativity, and community pride.
Titled “A Sense of Belonging,” the mural was unveiled during National Youth Week and was created through a collaborative effort between the Town of Milton and the Milton Youth Task Force.
“The inspiration behind this project was to create a sense of belonging,” shared Kelly McKay, Youth Recreation Coordinator for the Town of Milton. “We made it a priority to include youth voices and understand what belonging means to them.”
The mural’s theme came directly from youth input and aligned with the criteria of the project’s supporting grant. Young artists from across Milton worked under the mentorship of professional artist Monica Wickeler, who guided them in transforming their ideas into visual impact.
“You can't overstate how valuable it is when youth come together, build a sense of community among themselves, and realize the impact they can have on the town around them,” said Wickeler.
For many of the youth, the project was deeply personal and creatively fulfilling.
“It’s been such a great opportunity to share my love for art with others who value it too,” said Megan, a Grade 11 student.
“When people see the mural, I hope they feel a sense of connection and excitement,” added Aarij, a Grade 9 student.
The mural now stands as a lasting tribute to youth engagement and creativity. McKay emphasized its significance beyond Youth Week:
“This piece is more than just artwork — it’s a permanent reminder that youth voices matter and are vital to our community.”
