A large truck-safety crackdown in the Milton area has taken dozens of unsafe vehicles off the road. Halton Regional Police say their annual commercial-vehicle enforcement blitz in Campbellville inspected hundreds of trucks and found defects in about half of them.

What Happened

The blitz ran Tuesday, October 6 and Wednesday, October 7 at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville. Halton Regional Police hosted the event, joined by more than 100 officers and inspectors from agencies across the Greater Toronto Area and southwestern Ontario.

Inspectors gave mandatory inspections to 312 trucks and found defects in 158 of them, about 51 per cent. One hundred trucks, roughly a third, were taken out of service until critical repairs were made.

Key Details

• The blitz took place October 6 and 7 at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville.

• 312 trucks received mandatory inspections; 158 (51%) had prescribed defects.

• 100 trucks (32%) were placed out of service pending critical repairs.

• 195 charges were laid and 44 written warnings issued.

• Nine trucks were in such poor condition that their licence plates were seized, requiring repairs and recertification before they can return to the road.

• Brake and tire defects were the most common mechanical problems.

• A Ministry of Transportation mobile X-ray unit checked load security, and Ministry of Finance inspectors carried out 185 fuel- and tobacco-tax inspections.

Community Impact

Unsafe trucks are a risk to everyone sharing local roads and highways, so removing vehicles with brake and tire defects is aimed squarely at preventing collisions. Deputy Chief Kevin Maher said the results reflect the work of the inspectors and urged commercial operators to keep their vehicles properly maintained.

With major trucking corridors running through the Milton area, enforcement like this directly affects the roads residents use every day.

Background

Commercial-vehicle blitzes are held periodically to check that trucks meet safety and licensing standards. This event focused on driver licensing, daily trip inspections, mechanical fitness, load security and vehicle weights.
