Conservation Halton's Father's Day Fishing Derby Returns to Milton's Area 8 on June 21

Families looking for an outdoor way to mark Father's Day can head to Milton's Area 8 Conservation Area for Conservation Halton's annual Fishing Derby.

What Happened

Conservation Halton is hosting its Father's Day Fishing Derby at Area 8 Conservation Area on Sunday, June 21, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The derby is geared toward children eight years old and under, who can try to catch the biggest fish from the docks, the shoreline, or while exploring the reservoir by canoe or kayak. Dads, father figures and older kids are welcome to join in, though only children eight and under are eligible for derby prizes.

Key Details

• When and where: Sunday, June 21, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Area 8 Conservation Area.

• Schedule: check-in at 8:30 a.m.; optional boat rental sessions 9:00–10:00 a.m. and 10:30–11:30 a.m.; family celebration with games, activities, live music and a barbecue lunch 11:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.; awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

• Prizes: medals for all young anglers, with trophies for the largest fish in three age groups (four and under, five to six, and seven to eight).

• Catch-and-release only. The reservoir has been stocked with native species over several years; participants may see bass, brook trout, perch, sunfish and bluegill.

• Costs: $10 entry per child eight and under (plus regular park admission); optional rod rental $5; worms or corn kernels $5 each; canoe and kayak rentals $33.

• Bring your own lures, use barbless hooks and keep dogs leashed. Fishing at Area 8 is only permitted during approved Conservation Halton events and programs.

Community Impact

With school winding down and summer beginning, the derby gives Milton families an affordable, nature-focused outing close to home — and supports Conservation Halton's longer-term work to restore native fish species in the Area 8 reservoir.
