Halton Region has confirmed a major data breach affecting Allendale Long-Term Care Home in Milton, exposing the personal health information of residents spanning from 2005 to July 2024.
The breach originated from a June cybersecurity incident involving third-party software used by the facility. Initially, no data compromise was reported, but by September, it was confirmed that unauthorized parties had accessed sensitive data, including names, health details, and health card numbers.
Further investigations revealed that the breach may encompass all electronic health records (EHR) for residents dating back to 2005.
Halton Region is working with the software vendor to secure affected systems, enhance security measures, and review internal protocols. A cybersecurity expert has been engaged to evaluate the incident and monitor for any potential misuse of the stolen information.
