Milton Halts Photo Radar Program Pending Provincial Guidance

Milton’s photo radar pilot program, which had just started, is now on hold with no set date to continue.

The Town of Milton paused its automated speed enforcement (ASE) program — also known as photo radar — after the Ontario government said it plans to ban the cameras.

In September, Premier Doug Ford called photo radar a “cash grab” and announced new legislation to stop cities from using them. Milton had not yet installed any cameras, but earlier this year, in March, town council approved a plan to start a small pilot project.

Town representative Rob Faulkner said the program could return in the future, but that depends on what the province decides. “We understand the province plans to introduce the ban this month,” he said.

Ontario first allowed municipalities to use photo radar in 2019, but only in certain places like school zones and community safety zones. Since then, nearby cities like Burlington and Oakville have installed the cameras, saying they help reduce speeding.

Burlington’s mayor, Marianne Meed Ward, disagrees with Ford’s plan and joined 19 other mayors in signing a letter asking him to reconsider. Milton’s mayor, Gord Krantz, did not sign the letter. He said speeding is a serious problem, but photo radar isn’t the only way to deal with it.

“Speed cameras can help make roads safer if used carefully,” Krantz said. “But we also use speed bumps and roundabouts to slow cars and keep people safe.”
