Milton Library Expands Access to Thousands in Underserved Communities.

Imagine picking up or returning library books during your evening walk or after a workout at the sports center—no extra trips needed. That convenience is coming soon as Milton Council has approved a plan to install remote hold lockers in areas with limited library access, especially in Ward 4.

“A lot of new homes in Milton are in southwest Milton, in Ward 4,” explained Councillor Sarah Marshall, who proposed the idea. “These residents live far from any library, and these lockers will make borrowing books much easier.”

The lockers will first be placed at the Milton Sports Centre and the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. They’ll allow residents to borrow or return books easily. Along with lockers for book holds, there will also be a glass-panel display offering books for immediate borrowing, with each tower holding up to 60 titles.

“These community centers get over 1.5 million visitors every year,” Marshall said. “This means the lockers will benefit not just Ward 4 residents, but anyone visiting these centers.”

The lockers are also portable and can be moved to other areas, including rural locations, if needed.

When asked about the chosen locations, Milton Public Library CEO Sarah Douglas-Murray said the decision was based on factors like existing IT infrastructure and staff availability at Town-owned facilities. “We also wanted locations with long operating hours to make them accessible to shift workers,” she added.

The plan will not add extra costs for taxpayers and is fully supported by the Milton Public Library Board. The lockers are expected to be ready by 2025.

With over 630,000 in-person visits to the library this year, the demand for library services in Milton is growing rapidly. This initiative will make it easier for residents to enjoy those services close to home.
