With the deadline approaching for candidates to join the Liberal Party leadership race, Milton MP Adam van Koeverden has confirmed he won’t be running for the position. Instead, he plans to focus on serving his community and supporting the party’s future direction.
“I’m not running for the leadership of the Liberal Party,” van Koeverden said during a transit funding announcement at Milton Town Hall on Monday (Jan. 13). “I’m excited for the leadership race because it’s an opportunity for Canadians to discuss the kind of country they want moving forward.”
He credited the party’s forward-thinking policies for improving Canada’s position compared to 15 or 20 years ago.
“Some people want Canadians to feel like this country is broken. I disagree. Canada is the best country in the world,” he said, acknowledging existing challenges while urging governments to focus on real solutions instead of empty slogans.
The Leader Canada Needs
When asked about the qualities Canada’s next leader should have, van Koeverden emphasized standing firm against narratives suggesting Canada is becoming like the U.S.
He expressed concerns about the rise of right-wing populism and imperialist tactics from figures like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which threaten national sovereignty and spread misinformation.
“Canada is a unique and sovereign country. We can’t allow imperialism to undermine that,” he said. “We need leaders who are honest, hardworking, collaborative, and compassionate — people who don’t shy away from challenges but meet them head-on, just like Canadians do when the snow starts falling.”
Commitment to Community
Van Koeverden reaffirmed his dedication to his community, stating his intention to run for re-election in the new Burlington North-Milton West riding.
“I’m 100 per cent committed. I want to keep serving my country and my community,” he said, adding that his focus remains on achieving better outcomes for both Canadians and Milton residents.
Reflecting on Progress
Van Koeverden highlighted some of the Liberal government’s key achievements under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including:
Strong pandemic management.
Economic resilience and record-high employment rates.
The Canada Child Benefit, which has lifted over half a million children out of poverty.
Increased workforce participation by women, supported by affordable childcare programs.
Emissions reductions not seen since the early 1990s and ongoing efforts to combat climate change.
He urged Canadians to avoid isolationism, emphasizing that Canada’s strength lies in its global engagement and practical policy solutions.
