Adopt-a-Family Campaign Seeks Community Support for Single-Parent Families with the holiday season in full swing, Katie Plant is continuing a heartfelt tradition of generosity inspired by her parents, who often opened their home to those in need during tough times.
Now a single parent herself, Plant has made it her mission to give back to the community.
“Helping others is a big passion of mine. I do what I can, when I can, to support anyone,” she shares.
This Christmas, Plant is inviting single parents and sponsors to join her Adopt-a-Family (AAF) campaign, an initiative she launched in 2022 to bring holiday joy to children from single-parent families.
How the Campaign Works
The AAF program pairs sponsors with families in need. Sponsors can contribute gift cards or purchase presents from wish lists provided by single parents. Originally shared through Plant’s Single Parents of Milton Facebook group, the initiative has grown to engage the wider Milton community.
Addressing a Growing Need
According to the 2021 Census, Milton has approximately 4,260 single-parent households. Plant understands the unique struggles they face, especially during the holidays.
“Having one income and trying to make everything work—paying bills, managing household expenses, and creating a special Christmas for your children—is a difficult task,” Plant explained to Milton Today.
Community Response
So far this year, around 30 sponsors have stepped forward to support seven families, but Plant is hopeful more will join to assist additional households. While the campaign focuses on gifts for children, she’s also advocating for the parents’ needs.
“There are moms who haven’t asked for anything for themselves. My hope is to surprise them with something special because they rarely put themselves first,” Plant said.
How to Get Involved
The Adopt-a-Family campaign is an opportunity for the community to come together and ensure single-parent families feel supported and appreciated this holiday season. With more sponsors, Plant aims to brighten Christmas for even more families.
Those interested in sponsoring or learning more can contact Plant through her Single Parents of Milton group or the campaign’s community outreach.
