The clinic officially closes for the season on Thursday, January 23, after immunizing 500 babies against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a highly contagious virus responsible for 30-40% of pediatric hospitalizations.
This collaborative initiative, led by Halton Healthcare, the Connected Care Halton Ontario Health Team, Halton Region Public Health, and Primary Care Physicians, supported the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) new universal infant RSV prevention program. Held at Milton District Hospital, the clinic offered families convenient access to RSV immunizations for infants and high-risk toddlers, making it the only clinic of its kind in the region.
Under the new MOH program, free immunizations were extended to all newborns and babies born after January 1, 2024, as well as high-risk toddlers under the age of two. Previously, only high-risk or premature infants were eligible for free immunizations.
The clinic focused on immunizing babies born between January and November 2024 ahead of their first RSV season in the fall and winter. Babies born in November and later receive their immunization before being discharged from the hospital. The immunization helps protect vulnerable infants from severe lung infections, emergency room visits, and hospital admissions, improving their overall health and well-being.
“We are extremely proud to have been part of this initiative and thank everyone who contributed to its success,” said Cheryl Hoare, Program Director, Women and Children. “Together with the Connected Care Ontario Health Team, Halton Region Public Health, and Primary Care, we have protected the youngest members of our community and helped reduce the strain on our healthcare system. This initiative has been a remarkable achievement.”
