Milton’s Muslim Community to Gain New Worship Space Following Council Approval

Writer: Sana ShahidSana Shahid

Milton’s Muslim community will soon have a dedicated place of worship after the town council approved a temporary zoning bylaw for a new mosque.

During Monday’s (Jan. 27) meeting, the council unanimously granted the Muslim Association of Milton permission to establish the mosque at 1801 Thompson Rd. for a period of three years. The existing building will be repurposed without exterior modifications, but interior renovations will create multiple prayer halls with over 130 prayer spaces, a multi-purpose area, offices, and other essential facilities.

The project also includes a new parking lot with 58 spaces, featuring accessible and bicycle parking, along with a second site access point to improve traffic flow and emergency services.

This approval allows the mosque to operate temporarily while efforts continue toward securing a permanent location.

Coun. Adil Khalqi called the decision an “important milestone.”

“Places of worship from any community are very important to us here in Milton. We are always working to accommodate these needs as our town grows and diversifies,” said Khalqi.
