"Milton Says No Group Frustrated by Santa Claus Parade Sponsorship Rule Amid CN Hub Dispute"

A local group, Milton Says No, is upset with the Milton Santa Claus Parade organizers for what they feel is "unfair" treatment. The group, which opposes the location of CN’s intermodal terminal, wanted to sponsor this year’s parade after learning that CN would be the main sponsor.

“That was disappointing for us,” said Stacey Newman, the group’s director. She mentioned that other events, like the Milton Fall Fair and Canada Day, have previously turned down CN’s sponsorship. “We understand that events need sponsors, but we didn’t want to create division in the community. So we offered to replace CN as a sponsor.”

Milton Says No also offered to co-sponsor the event and applied to be a platinum sponsor, which requires a $2,000 donation. Though they have raised about $1,300 so far through GoFundMe, Newman and her husband plan to cover the remaining amount. However, the group says they haven’t received any response from the parade committee, despite reaching out via email, phone, and social media.

“They’re ignoring us,” Newman said, expressing frustration.

The parade committee told Milton Today that they have a rule against political affiliations or displays to keep the event focused on celebrating the holiday season. “We want the parade to be about joy and unity,” they explained, adding that CN has been sponsoring the event for over 20 years.

Newman argued that accepting CN’s sponsorship has already politicized the parade, given the company’s ongoing legal disputes with the community.

Despite their disappointment, Milton Says No doesn’t plan to disrupt the event. “We just want to raise awareness,” Newman said. “We’ll be there handing out candy canes. It’s about being part of the community.”

Newman also believes the group should be given the chance to sponsor the event, saying, “It’s only fair."
