A collection of stories, journeys, and creative expressions — all viewed through a diverse yet unified lens — awaits visitors at the First Ontario Arts Centre Milton’s Holcim Gallery this month.
From October 7 to 26, the exhibition Canvas of Muslim Artists: Honoring Heritage Through Art will mark the public debut of The Artist Cube, a newly formed Milton-based collective showcasing Muslim talent from across the GTA.
Public relations officer Sakina Khawaja says the non-profit’s mission is to create a space “for Muslim artists to share their love for all types of art under the umbrella of Muslim identity.”
“It’s a unified voice representing minorities, giving them an opportunity to showcase their work,” adds Khawaja, a Milton interior designer and visual arts graduate from the University of Ottawa.
Founded by Nargis Naqvi, Mohd Taqi Khan, and Zunaira Mufti, The Artist Cube received an overwhelming response to its first call for submissions, resulting in a vibrant 40-piece exhibition. The official opening night will take place on October 9.
“It’s exciting,” says Khawaja. “It’s about feelings, it’s about narratives.”
The collective views this debut showcase as just the beginning. Looking ahead, The Artist Cube plans to launch a mentorship program to help artists refine their craft and learn how to exhibit and market their work.
With around 150 members from diverse Muslim backgrounds, the group also aims to produce a quarterly online and print magazine to highlight local artists. They are now pursuing grants and sponsorships to further their efforts in strengthening Milton’s growing cultural and artistic landscape.
