Ongoing Residential Break-Ins Leave Milton Residents Concerned

Residential break-ins are on the rise in Milton, according to the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).
Investigators report that homes backing onto or located near trail systems and green spaces are being specifically targeted. Police believe the crimes are linked to organized groups operating across the region and throughout Ontario.
Most break-ins occur between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., as thieves take advantage of reduced daylight hours. Unlit and unoccupied homes are especially vulnerable. In many cases, suspects gain entry by smashing rear doors or windows under the cover of darkness.
Police say suspects often scout neighbourhoods beforehand, monitoring residents’ routines and waiting for moments when homes are empty—such as during evening errands or children’s sports activities. Once inside, thieves move quickly, ransacking bedrooms and other areas for cash, jewelry, luxury goods, and personal identification before fleeing within minutes.
Suspects typically wear dark clothing, gloves, facial coverings, and backpacks, helping them blend into residential streets and nearby trails.
HRPS urges residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity, people, or vehicles immediately.
Safety Tips to Help Protect Your Home:
Lock and secure all doors, windows, and gated areas.
Install shatter-resistant glass film, reinforced locks, and door hardware.
Use an alarm system and security cameras inside and outside your home.
Add motion-activated exterior lighting.
Keep interior lights or music on when away to create the appearance of occupancy.
Dogs can be an effective deterrent.
Keep hedges trimmed to improve visibility.
Inform trusted neighbours if you’ll be away, or arrange for a house sitter.
Maintain your property to look lived-in (e.g., lawn care, snow removal).
Store valuables in a secure, hidden safe.
Review your home insurance for adequate coverage of valuables.
