"Ontario Rolls Out New COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines Across the Province, Including Milton"

Updated: Nov 6, 2024

Starting today, Ontarians can receive free flu shots and the newly updated COVID-19 vaccine at local pharmacies, public health units, and primary care providers across the province. Staying up to date on vaccinations is the most effective way to safeguard yourself and your loved ones during this respiratory illness season, helping to reduce hospital visits.

“Our government is committed to ensuring Ontarians of all ages have the resources they need to protect their health,” says Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “With expanded eligibility for children under the RSV program and access to publicly funded flu and COVID-19 vaccines, we’re making it easier for families to access crucial care and protection this season.”

Flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines are available at participating pharmacies, public health units, and primary care providers. It is safe to receive both vaccines at the same time. All Ontarians six months and older are eligible for their next COVID-19 dose, provided it has been at least six months since their last dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection. Speaking with a health care provider can help determine the best vaccination schedule.

Beginning Monday, November 4th, the RSV immunization Beyfortus® will also be available for infants and high-risk children up to 24 months. The expanded RSV program will provide over 200,000 families with free access to Beyfortus® through public health units, health care providers, and hospitals for infants born during the 2024/25 respiratory season. Pregnant women can also choose to receive a single dose of Abrysvo® to protect their infants from birth through six months.

Ontario’s high-risk RSV prevention program for older adults has also expanded, with doses available for all residents aged 60 and older in long-term care homes, Elder Care Lodges, and retirement homes. As the first publicly funded RSV program for older adults in Canada, Ontario is leading the way globally in providing essential protection.

“Ontario’s RSV programs will be critical in protecting vulnerable babies, young children, and older adults from severe outcomes, including serious lung infections and hospitalizations,” says Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health. “To stay safe this respiratory season, I strongly encourage everyone, especially those aged 65 and older or at high risk, to get their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations.”
