It was hard to tell what Parm Gill was feeling more of in the early morning hours—relief or fatigue.
In a dramatic, nail-biting finish, the former Ontario MPP narrowly claimed victory in the newly formed federal riding of Milton East–Halton Hills South. Gill, who stepped down from Queen’s Park last year to pursue this federal seat, secured a 556-vote lead over Liberal challenger Kristina Tesser Derksen—with the final margin only becoming clear after 3 a.m.
Throughout the night, tension remained high. Tesser Derksen briefly held a couple of razor-thin leads, keeping both camps on edge until nearly all of the 201 polls had reported. The exhausting pace and uncertainty prompted Gill’s campaign team to send supporters home from his election gathering at Keenan’s Irish Pub shortly before 1 a.m., while promising media follow-ups later in the day.
Meanwhile, across town at Ned Devine’s, Tesser Derksen—currently serving her second term as a town councillor—reflected on the close contest. She attributed the riding’s tight results to the blend of communities brought together in the recent electoral redistribution.
“With the redistribution we brought in two communities. We've got Milton East and we've got Georgetown. Georgetown is more Conservative leaning, but Milton tends to be more Liberal,” Tesser Derksen explained. “We kind of have this tension between the two communities. I think it's what is contributing to the tightness.”
While Gill’s win marks a significant gain for the Conservatives federally, the race served as a reminder of the dynamic and diverse political landscape that now defines Milton East–Halton Hills South.
