As food insecurity continues to grow in Milton, new funding is helping meet the rising need.
Halton Food for Life, along with local MPP Zee Hamid, gathered at Southside Church on Main Street on Thursday to mark a $48,400 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The money will be used mainly to add more storage, including three new fridges and a freezer at Southside Church. This will allow the non-profit to help more than 50 additional families in Milton.
MPP Zee Hamid praised Food for Life for its ongoing work in the community and its welcoming, judgment-free approach. He said the funding will support new food programs by providing essential equipment like fridges and freezers.
With demand for food support up 20 per cent over the past year, the new equipment will help Food for Life offer more food options and better serve residents.
Donna Slater, Director of Programs and Community Partnerships at Food for Life, said the added space has already helped expand weekend programs and increase food access across Milton.
Food for Life operates at four locations in Milton and many more across Halton. It is the region’s largest food rescue organization, redistributing nearly five million pounds of food every year.
