Sweet Flavors from Nigeria Arrive in Downtown Milton

ree

After more than 10 years of hard work, Sarah Mbakwe has brought her bakery, Sweet palms Bakeshop, to downtown Milton — something she calls a “dream come true.”

Sarah moved to Canada in 2023. Before that, her bakery was in Nigeria, where she is from. For the past month and a half, she has been busy serving customers at her new shop at 25 Commercial St.

“It always looked impossible at first,” Sarah said. “But it’s possible. Believe in your dreams.”

Sweet palms still offers many of the same treats she sold back home, with some new creative twists. She now does more cake decorating and enjoys making unique designs for her customers.

Her menu includes cakes, cupcakes, and macarons. But she also makes Savoury snacks like meat pies, chicken pies, egg rolls, and her special beef rolls — puff pastry wrapped around sausage, similar to pigs in a blanket. She says her cakes are the most popular, and she can design them to match any special occasion.

Sarah’s baking journey started in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. While studying life sciences, she realized her true passion was baking. She trained as a pastry chef, first selling her cakes from home before eventually opening her first bakery.

The move to Canada wasn’t easy. She faced challenges like getting financing and building a customer base. To support her dream, she worked in commercial kitchens in Milton and Oakville while saving up.

With perseverance — and strong support from her husband Joseph and one of their daughters — Sarah has successfully reopened sweet palms in Milton.

“Just keep believing in your dreams and don’t give up,” she said. “Do what you love and find a way to turn it into a business.”
