"The Story Behind Milton's Bearberry Place and Twinflower Place"

Our exploration of local street names continues this week with a focus on natural themes. Each week, we talk with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor II to learn more about the namesakes of our streets. Challinor, along with the late historian Jim Dills, authored the book Milton Streets in 2007, documenting the history behind the town’s road names.

Previously, we explored the origins of Basswood Crescent and Violet Gate. This week, we’re looking at Bearberry Place and Twinflower Place.

Starting with Bearberry Place, Challinor explains that bearberries can often be spotted while hiking in Milton’s conservation areas. Known for their medicinal use, bearberries are commonly brewed into tea to help with aches and pains. Fun fact: bears also enjoy eating these berries.

Next is Twinflower Place, named after the unique-looking twinflower. While the flower itself is striking, Challoner notes its oddity: it’s not used in herbal medicine, cooking, or even as decoration. It’s one of those rare plants that seems to be admired for its simple existence without practical use.

For those interested in learning more about Milton’s street names, Milton Streets is still available at the Milton Public Library, though it's long out of print. With the town's growth in the past 15 years, an updated edition may be on the horizon.

Additionally, you can watch a walk through Milton’s Main Street in 2002 with Jim Dills, capturing a bit of the town’s history.
