This Is Where I Call Home”: Why deadmau5’s Milton Walk of Fame Induction Is So Meaningful

When you’ve earned international acclaim, how much does a hometown honour really matter? For Joel Zimmerman — better known as deadmau5 — the answer is clear: quite a lot.

The Milton Walk of Fame welcomed seven new inductees on Feb. 21, including the globally recognized electronic music producer. A Milton resident for roughly 12 years, Zimmerman is no stranger to major accolades. He’s a seven-time Grammy nominee, a four-time Juno Award winner and has even been featured with his own character skin in Fortnite.

But speaking after the ceremony, Zimmerman said the local recognition carries a deeper meaning.

“This one means a lot because this is where I’m at. This is where I live. This is where I choose to be — this is where I call home,” he said. “Getting awards in other places, in other countries and districts is all great, but it’s different. I don’t feel like I have to keep up appearances here.”

Born in Niagara Falls, Zimmerman qualified for the honour after living in Milton for more than a decade. During brief remarks following his induction, he spoke warmly about the community and his long-term commitment to it.

“I really meant it — I’m putting my roots down here for however long I end up doing this. I’m calling it my forever home now,” he said.

Induction into the Milton Walk of Fame includes having the recipient’s name added to a floor panel inside Town Hall. Honoree's are also entered into the town’s street name registry, meaning a future road could bear their name.

“deadmau5 Street — that would be nice,” Zimmerman said with a smile.
