A growing trend across Ontario has reached Milton: The Beer Store is closing two of its local outlets. The locations at 51 Millside Drive (beside the curling club) and 1015 Bronte Street will shut their doors on July 20.
These closures are part of a broader wave that began last spring, affecting dozens of Beer Store sites throughout the province.
Once these Milton locations close, the town will be left with just one remaining Beer Store, located at 1071 Maple Avenue.
The company has confirmed it will support affected employees through the transition.
The shake-up comes amid major shifts in Ontario’s retail alcohol market. With The Beer Store responsible for collecting about 1.6 billion containers annually for reuse and recycling, questions are mounting over the future of empty bottle returns.
Responsibility for returns could soon shift to grocery stores. Under new provincial rules set to take effect January 1, 2026, any retailer selling beer must accept empties if they’re more than five kilometres from a Beer Store.
