Volunteers Help Expand Milton Facility for Children with Complex Medical Needs

ree

More children with complex medical needs will soon have access to the care they urgently need, thanks to a major expansion at The Darling Home for Kids in Milton.

On Oct. 1, the organization announced that construction is well underway on a 10,000-square-foot addition. The project will increase overnight capacity from 12 to 16 beds and enhance therapeutic and program spaces throughout the facility.

The expansion is designed to help meet the growing demand for specialized pediatric care. According to the Darling Home for Kids, more than 70,000 children in Ontario are considered medically complex. CEO Kristin Horrell says the project marks an important step in serving those families.

“We envision a world where children with medical complexities can receive the love, care and support they deserve, and our expansion is another step forward in achieving that dream,” said Horrell.

Originally opened in 2004 to offer respite care for parents and caregivers, the home has steadily grown over the years — adding a residential program in 2007 and increasing its overall capacity.

The new space includes additional bedrooms, therapy areas, an expanded medication room, a four-seasons room, and multi-purpose areas for counselling, admissions, and family meetings.

The expansion has been made possible through generous donations and gifts-in-kind from members of the construction industry.

“Every brick, wall, shingle, door — and the entire infrastructure that supports our Home — was built thanks to hardworking trades and construction partners who rolled up their sleeves to bring our vision to life,” said Horrell. “We are deeply touched by their generosity and dedication to meeting the unique needs of our children.”
